Where is Open Media headed?

There is a LOT of work being done with Open Media modules right now that is not being reflected on this list. On Drupal 7. A lot of things are in development, and I will only speak from my own experiences - but I'll post and hope others will add. Please correct any errors.

There really seem to be two aspects of the Open Media System that are being implemented concurrently.

1) Facility and Project Management through modules like MERCI and OM_Show.
2) Custom configurations for community TV stations to integrate their playback system with their online video with the Internet Archive (and then tying that back to the modules above).

MERCI is getting some very intense development on Drupal 7. Its functionality is being expanded from strictly being a user driven system for reservations of equipment to being a wholly staff managed solution to being something in between. For stations of varying sizes, this approach is very appealing because it enables you to meet your community needs in a system that you think will work. And since we are on Drupal 7 exciting changes are being rolled back into releases. I'm confident of that.

The media part is testing the limits of the umbrella term of "Open Media" as defined in this group. Philosophically, the idea of a user driven TV channel can work, but for our community TV station I like the idea in a small dose at first. Maybe a thematic block a week of the best homegrown video from across the nation as curated by my own community members. This advocates digital media literacy and gets us on board.

Of course, you have to play to win - and I think the only way to get on board with any sort of file sharing project is to participate as a contributor and not just pull feeds/files. My goal is to ensure that our local playback system pushes media and relevant metadata to the Internet Archive. The pull is from RSS, but I, personally, am not ready to allow the Internet Archive to handle my video encoding for playback. I do however, like the idea that they can store an editable file type (as opposed to just mpeg 2 or mpeg4). It seems that there are many solutions for this. You can even see on the Internet Archive where the Open Media Project is a subset of the larger Community Media Collection. I just want to make sure that we can work together, here, and I hope that others feel the same way.

In closing, I consider the Knight Funded Grant project by Denver Open Media that launched the Open Media Project like Pangea - it's where it all began and from it things are evolving.
